Letter I Sent to Senator Chuck Shumer, D-NY

Why are we not hearing about the connection between Dubai Ports World, John Snow, David Sanborn, Carlyle Group and George Bush in the mainstream media? Seriously, this isn't about racism. Racism is the specious argument that the neocons are using to move the deal forward. This is about conflicts of interest and their potential for compromising our nation's security.

I've been waiting and waiting for the mainstream media and/or our Democratic congressional delegation to start talking about this, and so far, you all have been silent. It's very disturbing. I watched Face the Nation this past Sunday, and you, Mr. Shumer, were a guest. I was hoping and hoping you'd bring this up, but you didn't. I was disappointed.

I do feel that the only way for the Dubai ports scam to be properly scrutinized and possibly stopped is to bring up this horrific example of war profiteering. It's appalling, and as far as I'm concerned, reason alone for the impeachment of President (choke....) Bush.

Just when Bush's ratings are the lowest, he shows up in Afganistan this morning. He will do anything to divert attention from his treachery. It IS conflict of interest and all the Bushniks are getting rich off this war. It sickens me to see how dumb people can be who reelected this man.

BTW, stop by and meet my dusty dogs.

Good letter!

I agree, this is more about oil, water and weapons and not all about racism.

But the conversation is being kept in the framework of "DPI is an ARAB company." ARABS are the danger, not corporate and weapons connections to DPI.

Racism is their language of diversion. "The Other Anti-Semitism." It is being used to keep people's focus on each other and not on them. And while we are playing out our "ancient hatreds", they are robbing us all of everything good and sacred.

Sue, I just love it when you leave comments here. Desertpeace, I want you to know that sue is my sister. Neither of my sisters leave comments very often, but it's nice when you do. But, I also do know that you DO read, whether you leave comments or not.

The neocons are evil, and this ports deal is born out of their evil. I truly hope the repukes are seeing the light. But, I actually heard on the radio yesterday that they are now saying that dumbya is not really a conservative or a republican. They are starting to distance themselves from him in order to win some elections in November. In fact, they are even starting to call Bush a "liberal", blaming liberals for dumbya's and dickwad's failures. I truly hate them all. They are all so complicit in all of dumbya's and dickwad's failures. They are all slime.

Good for you, writing the letter. We're all ignored if we don't get in the faces of the people who are supposed to be the leaders.

This is a letter I received from Harry Reid, my Senator.

Thank you for contacting me regarding port security. I appreciate hearing
from you.

As you know, President Bush recently approved the sale of a port operations contract for the ports of New York, Newark, Baltimore, New Orleans, Miami and Philadelphia - six of the United States' largest ports - to Dubai Ports World, a company owned by the government of the United Arab Emirates (UAE). This deal was approved without consultation
with Congress or the 45-day review required by law.

In a post 9/11 world, many members of Congress, including myself, have questioned whether the sale puts our homeland security at risk. UAE served as a financial and operational base the 9/11 hijackers and it was once the center of the world's largest nuclear proliferation ring. In
addition, the UAE was one of three countries to recognize the Taliban
prior to September 11, 2001. Given this background, it is troubling that the Bush Administration did not conduct a rigorous national security
review of the Dubai Ports World deal.

Additionally, I am concerned that officials at the highest levels of our government - especially the President and Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff - were unaware of this deal until after it was approved. Moreover, Bush Administration officials appeared to be surprised to learn of a Coast Guard report expressing warnings and reservations about the risks posed by this deal.

After many members of Congress from both sides of the aisle voiced their objections to the plan, the Administration finally agreed to conduct a more thorough review of the transaction. While I am pleased with the decision to delay the deal, it is becoming increasingly clear that greater
congressional consultation is needed on this matter. Senator Charles Schumer (D-NY) introduced the Foreign Investment Security Act (S. 2333), which would give Congress the authority to reject the ports deal after completion of the new 45-day review. Additionally, Senators Hillary
Clinton (D-NY) and Bob Menendez (D-NJ) introduced the Port Security Act (S. 2334), which would prohibit the sale of port operation contracts to state owned companies. The Senate Banking Committee is reviewing both of
these bills, and several Congressional committees are also conducting hearings on this matter.

Finally, this situation also highlights the need for a greater focus on port security, and homeland security in general. As you may know, the 9/11 Commission issued a dismal set of grades in its final report, available at: http://www.9-11pdp.org/press/2005-12-05_report.pdf. Regrettably, more than 95 percent of all cargo entering this country is never screened. That is why I have I supported amendments last year by
Senators Mary Landrieu (D-LA), Frank Lautenberg (D-NJ), and Joe Liebermann (D-CT) to strengthen our port security and screening measures.

Contracting our major port operations to a company controlled by the Government of the UAE raises many concerns about this deal and about our homeland security. I am closely monitoring these proceedings because the
American people deserve to know how they will be affected if this
transaction is allowed to go forward. As I examine this proposal, you may be certain that I will continue to put the safety of all Nevadans, and the nation, first.

Again, thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts
with me. I look forward to hearing from you in the near future.
